It seems like that one old “DeviantArt is EEEEEEVUL! All artists beware!”-post from like two years ago is making rounds again, and I’ve been getting tagged to it.
So just for your information, here’s DevArt’s own post about that situation, and here’s the artist in question who’s design got used in the post explaining the case.
Thanks for the concern for my art’s well being, but there’s really no need. That fearmongering reblog about the situation is just reading the legal text in a really provoking way (dA’s user agreement text looks intimidating, I know, but it’s pretty much just because dA needs your explicit permission to use your art in their site = your own gallery/other people’s faves; needs the permission to let dA to edit your art because it needs to do that in order to make thumbnails, and there’s also a clause that lets dA to have those “share on tumblr/facebook/whatever”-buttons next to your art. Yes, it needs you to agree to the site’s basic functions with the user agreement, that’s legal text for you.)
(I hope it’s ok to reblog because you broke it down p well)
Also similar terms can be found on Instagram, Facebook, tumblr, Twitter and basically any website where users can upload content.
This is also why reposting and reuploading someone else’s artwork is against the rules on sites like dA and tumblr. Because you basically let these terms apply to someone else’s content.
I seriously urge people to not spread that post around again and not instantly deleting your account without second thoughts.
hmm I dunno :T i’d have to see more stuff to be sure
You remember that post about the homestuck t-shirt design contest collaborating with hot topic? And how Hot Topic are the biggest art thieves? This is recent. As you can see above, I stumbled upon Hot Topic’s website and they are selling a very popular fan art put on a t-shirt, and did not ask permission from the original artist (rismo).
This shows Hot Topic still continues their art thievery. Hot Topic are still taking art from artists without their permission. This is disrespectful and appalling.
EXCEPT YOU DID GIVE THEM YOUR PERMISSION.
BY AGREEING TO TERMS AND CONDITIONS ON DEVIANT ART.

“Of everything that I’ve held in my hands today, you are by far the most precious.”
Bonus points if it’s every day. Because of all the things you’ll ever hold in your hands, it will always be that person.
