They are different species!
Tumblr had deleted all my text when I queued this up (but I did re-add it to the original post).
Large green cicada: Superb Dog-day Cicada
Small gray cicada: Little Mesquite Cicada
They are both cicadas, but they are not in the same genus. That’s why they look so different! The Little Mesquite was very energetic, and was able to get the Superb to come out of her shell and move around a little (she wouldn’t budge before meeting him!)
